ELEX Ⅱ | Review in early play

I would like to touch on what I want to know if I start, recommended points, etc. This work seems to be an open-world action RPG released on March 1, 2022 as a sequel to “ELEX” by Piranha Bytes.

Before the launch, I remember that it was attracting attention with its trailer video and the pre-launch, “Fly in the sky with a jetpack and freely explore the open world, develop a wide variety of stories and enjoy it as you wish.” However, it is also a work whose existence has faded due to the simultaneous release of many big titles.

I bought it, but I’ve been playing ELDEN RING, and it’s been about 5 months since it was released.

Review after playing for about 30 hours

At present, my honest impression is that this work is a game that emphasizes the individuality and story of NPCs. However, unfortunately the Japanese translation is a bit awkward, and I can’t get a good sense of the NPC’s individuality. However, since the content of the conversation is within the range that I can understand, I have to say that it is my own problem as I am not good at English. 💦

The game progresses centered on the main story, and you can progress while enjoying the sub-quests that occur in conversations with NPCs. “This area feels similar to Skyrim and The Witcher 3.”

You can’t experience flying with a jetpack that you care about in the early stages. “I will introduce it later, but the jetpack’s early game abilities are secondary.”

Then, when it comes to battles and graphics, compared to recent big titles (ELDEN RING and Horizon), honestly, it pales in comparison. Recently, due to the evolution of the Unreal Engine, graphics that could be mistaken for the real world. From my perspective as a member of the Famicom generation of the Showa era, the game industry continues to evolve like a god, with exhilaration and battles that make full use of play skills.

So, I personally felt that it was not possible to evaluate the ELEX II. Character stats, skill acquisition, weapon enhancement, and crafting elements have been designed in great detail, making it an element that sticks with those who stick to it.

Things to notice and things to know

From now on, I’d like to talk about things I’ve noticed so far and things I should know if I’m going to play. It’s common to all games, but even if you buy it casually, when you actually play it, you may be frustrated before you can feel the fun.

I hope it will be helpful for those who are considering purchasing.

game difficulty

To put it mildly, I can’t help but say that the battle difficulty in the early stages of this work is unreasonable.

Even though I’m not good at it, I’ve been playing dead games such as the Soul series. “Even though you started on normal difficulty, the characters END appear frequently on the screen in the early stages of the battle.”

If you buy ELEX II and if you are not good at action, be sure to start with the story difficulty!

About combat

As you can see from the two images below, when you pick up a weapon and face an enemy, your status will be displayed above the enemy character. Enemies with a skull mark on the left of the status bar indicate their degree of danger relative to the current character level. We have already confirmed 1 to 3 skull marks, but monsters like this will appear frequently in the early stages of the field.

A single hit will immediately notify the player of death. “There are guards equipped with paries and shields, but it will take some time to get the hang of them.”

Shields in the early stages do not have a physical cut rate of 100%, so they will take damage. “Parry’s timing isn’t difficult if the enemy is a human, but it’s not easy if it’s a monster.”

standing in the early stages

After all, avoidance is the main focus in the early stages, and weapon attacks after rolling to the side of the enemy are the main axis. In this work, there is also the concept of stamina, so if you don’t manage to manage it, even if you try to attack after dodging or rolling, it’s quite possible that you’ll run out of stamina and won’t be able to swing your weapon.

The yellow bar at the bottom right of the screen is stamina, and the red bar at the bottom left is physical strength. In the early stages, use a melee weapon, and after rolling, use RT to attack with your weapon.

Not all enemies, but there is a high probability that you can get frightened or knocked down. When you get knocked down, check the stamina gauge and hold down RT to launch a strong attack.

Notes on ranged weapons

It may be only in the early stages, but long-range weapons take time to reload, so it’s not a good idea to face the enemy on the same terrain. I felt that it was necessary to use heights to prevent people from approaching me.

no key config

You can check the command assignment of the controller on the setting screen, but there is no key configuration function. You can check the normal, close combat, long range combat, and jetpack key assignments, and each mode will automatically switch during play.

How to proceed

Back in the Showa era, when games came with paper manuals, I still often get confused about how to proceed with a game just by being able to see how to operate the controller on the screen. I was confused at the beginning of this work, so I would like to introduce a little.

When you open the menu screen, you can check your stats, abilities, inventory, log, map, and glossary. “Log” is an important item in progressing through this work.

Various missions will be added to the log, including the main mission. It seems that this will be added through conversations with NPCs and the progress of missions. In other words, in order to progress through this work, check the missions in the log, select them, and carry them out.

  1. Select log on the menu screen
  2. Select the mission you want to proceed
  3. Press the Y key (for controllers)
  4. check the map

The game progresses as described above.

If you mark the mission you want to proceed on the map, the destination and target will be marked, so you won’t get lost. “The mission progress is designed with kindness in mind.”

How to level up

Leveling up is basically the accumulation of experience points. “Experience points can be obtained when defeating enemies and when completing missions.” The important thing is the attribute value (AP/LP) obtained when leveling up.

Attribute value (AP/LP)

Use AP Points to increase stats

Characters have five stats, and strengthening these determines the weapons and abilities that can be used. “The more powerful the weapon, the more stats are required.” “Depending on the weapon used, the type and level of ability values required will differ.”

Learning abilities requires LP points and trainers

Various conditions are required to learn abilities. Each ability has its own dedicated trainer, and you need to find your whereabouts and talk to them. In addition, it is necessary to prepare all of the currency, Electit, required ability values, and LP points.

At first glance, it’s a lot of work, but as you play, you’ll start to want a sense of accomplishment when you master it.

How to choose an alliance

As you progress through the game, selecting and forming alliances will be added to the main mission. “Of course, it’s possible to proceed as a lone wolf, but each faction has its own unique abilities.”

You can check the abilities that can be acquired by each faction by opening the abilities on the menu screen. “By the way, I’m currently planning to form an alliance with Alp.”

others

It’s a trifle from here, but if you know it, you may be able to devise your own early.

Utilizing quick slots

A quick slot is a holder-like function for registering frequently used items. It can be opened during battle or exploration with the Y button on the controller, and can be easily selected and used with the L stick.

It is recommended to register and use mainly for weapon switching and recovery items.

How to use a jetpack early on

Early jetpacks aren’t as useful as flying freely through the air. “It’s an object that will quickly run out of energy and take damage after falling.”

I’ve been playing for 30 hours and still haven’t been able to upgrade. “Well, I guess I’m not good at this.”

There are two ways to use it early on.

① Used for moving to high places

見張り台や建物の屋根などにはアイテムが落ちていることもあります。 また、歩かずとも高所へ移動することに利用すれば、移動時間の短縮につながります。

② Used when jumping from a high place

This can also shorten the travel time. You will take damage when jumping from a high place, but you can jump off without taking damage by blowing the jetpack just before landing or during the descent.

The early nights are full of danger

Although the headlamps turn on when you press the four-way controller, visibility is too poor at night, probably because of the emphasis on realism. “It’s not uncommon to encounter unexpected enemies and die instantly.” “Choose a daytime or bright place to explore.”

People who can recommend ELEXⅡ

If you clear all difficulty levels, I think I can give you accurate advice, but please forgive me for speaking in a half-finished state.

Finally, as a personal opinion, I would like to talk a little about people who can recommend this work.

I have to say that the early stages of this work require a lot of patience to play outside of story difficulty. On the other hand, my personal opinion is that the translation is incomplete even if you play with the story difficulty level, and it is questionable whether you can enjoy it enough.

The early stage requires patience and effort to build up little by little. In other words, the ELEX II has a finish that is very unsuitable for impatient people. Because the translation is incomplete, I feel that it is important in the early stages to feel the enjoyment and sense of accomplishment in character development and confronting powerful enemies over and over again.

As you progress through the game, you will be able to have NPCs accompany you. “At this point, the battle will become a little easier.” “Anyway, it’s recommended for those who don’t mind clearing one step at a time and accumulating them.”

Seniors who have played ELEX II are uploading information on the internet. Looking at them, I get the feeling that there are various ways to enjoy the game after surviving the early stages.

If you’re going to play, why don’t you overcome the cramped early stage, develop your character as you wish, fly in the sky as you wish, explore the story with NPCs as you wish, and clear the game? “It might turn out to be a more fun game than you think.”
