ELEX II ｜Review & Notes

I cleared the main mission and played for about 100 hours, so I’m going to review it. I hope that it will be helpful for those who have not played the game yet, including what I felt about this work and points to note.

Review ELEX II from an amateur’s point of view

ELEX II was released on March 1, 2022 (Steam on March 2) as an open world SF action RPG. However, the release of big titles overlapped at the same time, and it was unfortunate that its existence itself faded. It’s true that compared to big titles, the graphics and action are inferior, but it’s not a bad product.

I myself haven’t played the original ELEX, so I’m an amateur in this work, but I was able to fully enjoy it. If we talk about the story and character backgrounds in detail, it will deprive the players of their enjoyment, so we will proceed without going into details.

There is no problem even if you play from this work

Needless to say, since it is an RPG, the story is important. It’s not an exaggeration, but I felt that even those who haven’t touched the original ELEX should have no problem playing from this work. This is because as the story progresses, events in the first ELEX will be narrated. The advantage of playing from the first generation is that you can feel how the operability and visuals have evolved.

Conversation with NPC

The first thing I felt was that each NPC has its own personality. You can get a sense of their individuality from their speaking tone, and their conversations are carefully crafted. “The Japanese translation is a little awkward in some parts, but once you get used to it, you will be able to convey it without any problems.” “This feeling is similar to Skyrim and The Witcher.”

What I thought was a little disappointing is that the display time of Japanese subtitles is short even though there are many long conversations. In other words, the display switches according to the timing of the English conversation, so the next subtitle is displayed before you finish reading. Fortunately, the contents of the conversation are saved in the log on the menu screen, so you can read it calmly by opening it, but it’s a shame.

About the mission

This work consists of main missions and side missions, and it can be said that it is a mission clear type RPG that aims to clear the game by advancing these. For those who are familiar with JRPGs, etc., it is difficult to understand how to proceed with the game, so I will explain a little.

In this work, missions will occur from conversations with NPCs, but if you do nothing, navigation to the place you should go to will not be displayed on the MAP. “It sounds verbose, but whether it’s the main mission or whatever, it’s not displayed on the map at all.”

So what should you do? where should i go? “Because you don’t know things like this, it will be difficult to progress through the game.” “It’s not uncommon for many people to retire just after the game starts.”

If you want to play ELEX II, the first thing you should do is “use the log screen”. First of all, it is important to open the menu and check the log in order to proceed with ELEX II. On the log screen, you can check missions that can be progressed, acquired items (things that are not classified as inventory), completed missions, etc. “Every time a mission occurs, it will be added to the log screen.”

Utilization of the log screen

Since I talked about the importance of the log screen in the previous section, I will introduce a little about how to use it.

First, when you hover over a mission, the contents of the mission will be displayed on the right side of the screen. In this state, you can proceed to the next step by following the instructions at the bottom right of the screen. The dialog displays the content of conversations with NPCs in that mission in chronological order, making it convenient to check later. If you mark it on the map, the place you should go to will be displayed on the map.

Mission occurs → Check log → Mark on map → Mission accomplished

About actions

From here on, I will talk about points to note when playing on normal difficulty or above. “If you’re not good at action, be sure to select the story.”

The reason is that you will be annoyed by the enemy’s attack power from the beginning of the game. “Even though you can’t defeat him without hitting him several times, you’ll die after one or two hits from the enemy’s attacks.”

Mainly long-distance in the beginning

Like many action RPGs, this game has both melee and ranged weapons. In the early stages, we recommend that you basically focus on long-range combat using long-range weapons. However, until you acquire a shotgun-type long-range weapon and train your character to a level where you can equip it, you will have to fight with patience.

Whether or not you can get through this is the ordeal that comes when you select normal or higher difficulty.

Close combat is also fun after the middle stage

When character development progresses and the jetpack is strengthened to some extent, melee weapons become fun. In close combat, there are powerful elemental weapons and weapons with sockets, and you can add additional effects by attaching gems to the sockets. “It’s like the material in FF and the protection stone in Monster Hunter.”

In melee combat, you’ll face enemies while incorporating parry and evasion. “Of course, there are shields, but not all of them have a 100% physical attack cut rate.” In addition, with a shield, evasion will change from rolling to stepping, so if you have a shield, we recommend that you use 100% physical cuts and mainly guard.

Personally, I prefer evading and parrying without a shield.

Combat with melee weapons became more fun when combined with a somewhat beefed-up jetpack and increased variations in melee attacks against enemies. “This is a video of a jetpack ascending and attacking the enemy at a rapid approach.”

This allows you to simply operate the jetpack during the initial ascent, and if the enemy is locked on, simply press the attack button to follow them.

Of course, ground battles are thrilling and fun, but I’ll be patient until I can get strong weapons.

About Jetpack

As many people have reviewed, the early jetpacks cannot fly freely in the sky. Some people may have stopped playing ELEX II after hearing reviews like this. “Therefore, I have decided that it is necessary to explain here, so I will explain the details.”

There are various abilities in this work, each of which has its own trainer scattered around the world. In short, in order to unlock and learn abilities, you will need a dedicated trainer, the necessary character stats, and LP points.

Go to the bottom of the abilities screen and you’ll see a jetpack item. However, the jetpack will be strengthened on the jetpack bench without the need for a dedicated trainer.

Jetpack flight time increases with the fuel tank. First, release the “additional tank”, obtain fuel, and add it to the fuel capacity. “Up to 50 fuels can be added.”

Other jetpack abilities are necessary for comfortable use, but increasing flight time is a priority.

And another important thing is

If you clear the main mission, you will be able to fly freely in the sky regardless of fuel.

As you can see by watching the following two videos, the fuel gauge at the bottom right of the screen remains full and does not decrease.

Prioritize the main mission! It’s OK to do side missions later.

It’s extreme, but if you want a jetpack at your disposal, so be it.

Precautions when promoting ELEXⅡ

Here, we will introduce how to enjoy ELEX II without stress if you know it. “This work seems to have a lot of freedom, and if you proceed haphazardly, you will have a hard time.”

This is because character development is the key to combat and quest clearing. In character development, it is important to properly raise and release stats and abilities.

About stats

The feature of this work is the role of the ability value. “The purpose of stats is not just to strengthen your character.” Of course, it is true that the character itself will be strengthened, but stats are closely related to acquiring abilities and equipping weapons.

Weapons are melee weapons and ranged weapons, and the conditions for equipping them are different. “Equipment requirements require two stats.” For example, melee weapons require strength and agility.

Also, ability values are required to acquire abilities.

It may be said that the trick to enjoying ELEX II comfortably is to systematically apply the AP obtained by leveling up to ability values.

About priority abilities

Here we will discuss the priorities. “There are a lot of abilities, and at first I’m at a loss as to what to acquire.” As I mentioned earlier, there are required stats for acquiring abilities, so it’s easy to get things that you can acquire with priority.

My priority is as follows, but please take it as a reference only.

1. Combat to Melee Weapons
2. Combat-to-range weapons
3. Additional HP from Survival 👉 Physical Recovery
4. Craft to Weapon 👉 Gem Socket

melee weapon

In this game, there are three ways to earn experience points for leveling up: defeating enemies, clearing quests, and using items that earn experience points. “In any case, battles cannot be avoided.”

Until you can acquire and equip powerful shotguns and heavy weapons, you will have to resort to melee weapons. Even with the enemies in the early stages, the normal difficulty level will kill them after one or two hits. “In that case, you should first acquire the ability for melee weapons.”

Minimum level 1 to level 2 is what you want to acquire in the early stages.

ranged weapons

Let’s level up the ability’s ranged weapon at the timing when you can equip shotguns and heavy weapons. From the beginning to the middle of the game, long-distance combat with shotguns is overwhelmingly easy.

Let’s also acquire the ability of heavy weapons. “There will always be situations where you have to rely on heavy weapons for firepower.” “Unlike shotguns, heavy weapons will also take damage if you are close to the point of impact.” “Keep an eye on your distance from the enemy and pull the trigger.”

Physical recovery

I think this ability is pretty important. “Recovers HP that has been lost due to damage over time.” The battle intensifies as the final stage approaches, and recovery items are mainly used during battle. After the battle is over, you can save your recovery items by using the gradual natural recovery of your physical strength.

This ability becomes available after obtaining extra HP. The trainer required to obtain it will be an NPC who can teach survival.

gemstone socket

No rush, but gem socket abilities are a must when using melee weapons. “Powerful rare weapons (weapon frames are yellow) almost always have gem sockets.”

You can’t get gem sockets unless you get weapon manufacturing, so let’s see the timing and get it.

Required for some subquests

Some subquests have abilities that you need to clear. “That’s hacking and pickpocketing.” “Keep in mind the location and acquisition requirements when you encounter a trainer.”

floating

One of the jetpack’s abilities is levitation. “This is an excellent item that expands the range of combat, allowing you to use weapons while floating.” “It’s essential when defeating airborne enemies with melee weapons, and it makes the battle so much more addictive.”

Of course, it is also necessary to snipe enemies on the ground from the air with shotguns.

Other abilities can be said to be mostly acquired according to the fighting style and play style. First of all, after checking all the contents on the ability screen, think about how you want to play this work, and if you acquire it according to that, you will have more ways to enjoy it.

At the end

As many fans say, this work is a good old RPG. Since this is a single-player game, once you clear all the missions, it may be difficult to pursue addictiveness other than aiming to become the strongest warrior.

However, there are scenes that make you cry in the story, and it is also true that you can get a sense of immersion. From the second half of 2022 to 2023 and beyond, many titles of interest are scheduled to be released. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that ELEX II should be given priority, but I felt that it would be good to try this work at some point.
